Welcome To Nursing HELLo a Graphic Memoir eBook Joel Craig Reviews

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review.

Joel Craig's graphic memoir is an unusual one, with a solid voice and an honest message. Throughout his 20s, Craig pined to be an actor, but he headed to nursing school at the prospect of a regular paycheck. I identify with that I'm an artist who worked as a Nursing Assistant for 3 years. I enjoyed Craig's book for that reason he tells the unedited truth about nursing in a sweet, clear, witty voice.

The nursing stories in the book are super entertaining. I found myself wanting more of those, and less explanation of why the author decided to write the book, which is explained a few times. I didn't mind the book's basic drawings because the narrative and character are so damn lovable. Ultimately, I am giving the book a 4-star review because the print was fuzzy (might have been a compression issue on the printer's end), and it could have used a bit more editing.

I encourage anyone with nursing experience to read this book and share it with your co-workers. Or better yet, start a nursing book group! It's funny and will be unlike anything you've seen before.
My mom is an RN and I have heard horror stories from her my whole life so when I saw this book I knew we both had to read it! We adored the nursing experience stories and could relate to them on so many different levels. This book has us laughing and nodding our heads all the way through. Any one in the nursing profession will be able to relate to this book and will enjoy it greatly.

But this book is not just about nursing. It goes deeper than that. It is a book also about how to handle the curve balls that life will throw at you. Sometimes your dreams are not what God has in store for you and you find yourself of a different path in life. Joel's dream was to be an actor, but the reality was he needed a regular paycheck to be able to chase his dream.

Welcome to Nursing Hello captures the humor of the life of a nurse, but also the creative passions of a young man that has not given up on his dreams, but has found a new and profound way to live them out.
NOTE I received a complimentary review copy from the author. My thoughts are my own.

I came across Joel Craig's Welcome to Nursing Hello after searching online for some nursing zines. I am a new nurse in my mid-30's who came to the profession after working as an editor for a few years. I found the great zine, Harlot RN, before starting nursing school and was looking for more now that I am actually working as a nurse. Nursing Hello was the only one I found and I downloaded and quickly read the first two short volumes of the zine, which appear in this full volume.

With simple illustrations and witty writing, Joel really captures the absurdities, doubts and frustrations that most nurses face. He also offers some helpful hints for new nurses, like "the brain," a manila paper on a string attached to Joel's scrubs, which contains vital patient information. And there are memorable lines from one his favorite fellow nurses, the seasoned Loretta "It's never too early, it's always too late."

All of these features alone would make for an engaging story that those in the nursing profession can laugh and nod their head along to. But what really makes this story special is how Joel explores the realities of transitioning from a life that once followed the path of a dream profession (in Joel's case, acting) into one that is decidedly less dreamy. As someone who was always a creative daydreamer but needed to eventually figure out a steady way to pay the bills, I completely related to this aspect of Joel's story. He gives glimpses into his acting life prior to being a nurse and conveys how he reignited his lost creativity as a nurse by first discovering graphic novels and zines and then creating one himself.

A great device in this memoir to get his further into Joel's mind is the use of Joel's imaginary conversations with Madonna. This could be a cringe-worthy gimmick but Joel completely pulls it off, and uses this as another way to show the reader how he balances the work grind with his need to create art. His conversations with Madonna are both comedic and a way to impart wisdom to himself about how art is actually created. Even Madonna has to do things she doesn't want to do so that she can ultimately create the life she wants.

I found Welcome to Nursing Hello utterly inspiring and comforting as I adapt to my new nursing career and figure out ways to not let my creative self die along the way. This book is a must for any nurse, particularly new ones, offbeat ones and those entering the field later in life. But it's a story that anyone who is balancing their day job with their creative impulses will relate to.
I actually went to nursing school with the author Joel Craig so when I heard he had written book about it I HAD to have it! Joel was so funny and entertaining during such an intense time. His book represents all that and more! Such a clever, well written memoir that I really enjoyed! I hope he continues to do put his thoughts and experiences down on paper for us all to share with him. Bravo Joel!
